Local knowledge for Accra
Where to stay
Osu, anchored along Oxford Street, is where most budget travelers end up: walkable, full of food options at every price point, and easy to reach from Kotoka International by Bolt. Adabraka, just west of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange (Circle), is a notch cheaper and has better tro-tro connections if you plan to move around the city a lot.
Getting around
- Download Bolt before you land and use it for the airport transfer. The fixed-rate taxis outside arrivals at Kotoka International will quote GHS 200 or more; Bolt runs the same route for a fraction of that.
- Tro-tros are cheap (usually under GHS 5 a leg) but the system is unwritten. Tema Station and Circle are the two main hubs. Just ask a local which tro-tro goes where. No app maps it reliably.
- Kantamanto Market off Ring Road Central sells second-hand imports at very low prices and is worth a morning, but keep your phone in a front pocket once you are deep in the stalls.
When to go
Hostels fill up and prices jump in December through early January when the diaspora returns for the holiday season. February through March and late October through November are the quietest months, with noticeably lower rates.
