Most budget hostels cluster within a few blocks of Zhibek Zholy, the pedestrian street cutting through Almaly district. That puts you walking distance from the Green Bazaar and on the metro at Almaly station for the rest of the city.

Getting around

  • The ground-floor stalls at the Green Bazaar (corner of Zhibek Zholy and Baibatyr) serve somsa and tea for well under a dollar. Go before 9am before it gets crowded and hot.
  • Kok-Tobe hill is walkable via the road up from Dostyk Avenue in 30-40 minutes, which skips the cable car fee entirely. The view is the same.
  • Baraholka, the sprawling wholesale market on the city's western edge, is hard to navigate without a local and mostly sells bulk goods. The central bazaars are easier, and prices on everyday items are not meaningfully higher.
