Local knowledge for Amsterdam
Where to stay
Budget hostels cluster in De Pijp, a few blocks from Albert Cuyp Market, and along Kinkerstraat in Oud-West. Both neighborhoods sit on tram lines that reach Centraal in under 15 minutes, and you avoid the noise and markup of anything near Leidseplein.
Getting around
- Buy a 24-hour GVB transit pass at Centraal rather than single tram tickets. Four rides already cost more than the day pass, and you'll take more than four.
- The IJ ferry behind Centraal Station to Amsterdam Noord is free and runs every few minutes. NDSM wharf on the other side has cheap food stalls and bars that most visitors never find.
- Albert Cuyp Market (De Pijp, Monday through Saturday) sells hot fries, raw herring, and stroopwafels fresh off the griddle for a euro or two each. Eat lunch there instead of any sit-down place in the Jordaan.
When to go
January and February offer the lowest hostel rates. King's Day weekend (late April) and the stretch from mid-July through August fill beds weeks out, with prices to match.
