Local knowledge for Athens
Where to stay
Monastiraki and Psyrri are where most budget travelers end up. Monastiraki Square sits on metro Lines 1 and 3 with the Acropolis a 15-minute walk uphill, and Psyrri, just to the west, runs slightly cheaper on food and has fewer tour groups on its side streets.
Getting around
- Take the X95 airport express bus (a few euros) to Syntagma Square instead of the airport metro (a bit more). It runs 24 hours, stops at the same square, and is the better call unless you need a direct metro connection.
- The Varvakios Agora on Athinas Street is a working meat-and-fish market with cheap lunch spots inside the interior arcade. A full meal runs just a few euros and the crowd is locals, not tourists.
- Greek state museums, including the Acropolis site, are free on the first Sunday of each month from November through March. Check the calendar before paying for your visit.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest and easiest to find November through February. July and August fill up fast, and Greek Easter in April or May spikes prices for a long weekend, so book ahead if your dates overlap.
