Local knowledge for Bucharest
Where to stay
Most hostels cluster along and just off Strada Lipscani in Centrul Vechi (Old Town), which puts you near the bars and monuments but also means noise until 3am on weekends. For quieter sleep at similar prices, look a few blocks south toward Piața Unirii, still on the M2 metro line and a 10-minute walk to everything.
Getting around
- Buy an STB 10-trip card at any metro station kiosk for a small fee. It covers buses, trams, and metro, and is far cheaper than paying per ride.
- Take the Express 100 bus from Henri Coandă Airport straight to Piața Unirii (it replaced the old 783). Skip the taxi queue at arrivals entirely, or use Bolt if you have bags.
- Piața Amzei, a small covered market just off Calea Victoriei, has cheap produce and hot cooked lunch. Any Mega Image corner store also sells full rotisserie chicken for a cheap price if you want a quick, filling meal.
When to go
Hostels fill fastest June through August when the Old Town draws heavy weekend party crowds. January and February are the cheapest months, with a small price bump in December around the Christmas market at Piața Constituției.
