Most budget travelers end up around the Old City moat, specifically Moonmuang Road and the lanes off Tha Phae Gate, where guesthouses are dense and everything is walkable. Nimmanhaemin Road (Nimman) is quieter and more cafe-heavy, worth it if you have a scooter and want to skip the backpacker strip.

Getting around

  • Rent a scooter from any shop on Moonmuang Road for a low daily rate. It unlocks Doi Suthep, the outer night markets, and the whole city far faster than red songthaews.
  • Eat breakfast at Chiang Mai Gate Market on the south side of the moat. Tom yum and khao tom for next to nothing, mostly locals, done by 9am.
  • Book hostels a week out during Yi Peng (November full moon) and Songkran (mid-April). Prices double and the cheaper beds go first. Outside those windows, walk-ins are usually fine.
