Budget beds cluster in the downtown core around the shopping arcades and the Friendship Bridge, where the constant flow of Brazilian shoppers keeps prices competitive. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the tri-nation viewpoint and the bus terminals, though the area is intensely commercial rather than scenic. Some cheaper options sit a few blocks inland from the riverfront, trading the border buzz for slightly quieter streets.

Getting around

• Ciudad del Este is primarily a shopping stop and gateway to Iguazu Falls, not a destination for lingering. Most budget travelers use it as a one-night base before crossing to Foz do Iguaçu or Puerto Iguazú, so book accordingly and do not expect a traditional backpacker social scene.
• Bring Paraguayan guaraní in small denominations. The city runs on cash for street vendors, mototaxis, and smaller shops, and while larger malls accept cards, exchange rates at informal border counters can be tricky if you are not paying attention.
• The Friendship Bridge to Foz do Iguaçu is the main artery for movement. Buses and shared vans to Asunción depart from the terminal on the city's edge; agree on fares before boarding informal transport, as prices for foreigners are often inflated on the spot.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the rainy season from November through March, when humidity and storms dampen visitor numbers. Prices spike during the dry winter months of June through August, which offer the best weather for visiting Iguazu Falls, and around major Brazilian holidays when cross-border shopping surges.
