Most budget guesthouses cluster along Main Street and the hillside lanes that branch off toward the Ella Rock trailhead. The further you get from the train station, the quieter and often cheaper the stays get.

Getting around

  • Get to the Nine Arch Bridge before 8am. Tour groups arrive mid-morning, and the soft light before the mist burns off makes for a better view anyway.
  • Book the Kandy-to-Ella train (3rd class, around 500 LKR) at least three days ahead in high season. Unreserved means standing for six hours through the hill country.
  • Skip the restaurants facing Main Street and eat at the smaller spots up the side lanes. Same rice and curry, noticeably lower prices, and no one pushing you toward a set menu.
