Local knowledge for Faro
Where to stay
Most hostels cluster in the Baixa, within a few blocks of Faro train station along Rua Conselheiro Bivar and Rua de Santo António. The old town inside the medieval walls (Cidade Velha, entered through the Arco da Vila) is quieter at night but has almost no budget beds, so it works better as a 20-minute evening walk than a base.
Getting around
- Bus 16 connects Faro Airport to the city center (Jardim Manuel Bivar) for a small fee. Ignore the taxi queue outside arrivals.
- Take the train to Olhão (10 minutes, just a couple of euros). Its covered waterfront market has far better and cheaper seafood than anything near the Faro marina.
- Ferries to Ilha Deserta and Ilha do Farol depart from the pier at Jardim Manuel Bivar. Book the first or last boat of the day to avoid the midday crowds that pile in from bus tours.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest and nearly empty from November through February. July and August fill up fast across the whole Algarve, so prices jump and beds in the Baixa go fast by early June.
