Where to stay
Most budget beds sit around Hakone-Yumoto, the Odakyu Romancecar terminus from Shinjuku and the base of the Hakone Tozan Railway. It has convenience stores for cheap meals and puts you at the bottom of the mountain loop without needing a taxi.
Getting around
- Buy the Hakone Free Pass at Shinjuku station before you leave Tokyo. It covers the full Hakone Tozan Railway up to Gora, the ropeway over Owakudani, and the Lake Ashi pirate boats (the Romancecar from Shinjuku needs a separate limited-express ticket). One full sightseeing day and it pays for itself.
- Get on the ropeway to Owakudani before 10am. Tour buses from Tokyo unload in force by mid-morning and the viewing platforms above the sulfur vents get packed quickly.
- Skip the sit-down restaurants in Gora and Miyanoshita for lunch. The 7-Eleven near Hakone-Yumoto station is two minutes from the platform and saves you a good chunk of change per meal, which covers an onsen entry fee.
When to go
