Where to stay

Most budget hostels cluster in the Old City near Chandpol Gate and Johari Bazaar, putting Hawa Mahal and the main bazaars within walking distance. Bani Park, a few kilometers west, is quieter and often a few dollars cheaper per night, with straightforward auto-rickshaw access to Jaipur Junction.

Getting around

• Walk up to Amber Fort via the rampart footpath instead of paying for the jeep convoy. It takes about 20 minutes and gives you a better approach view than the crowded vehicle queue.
• For Agra or Delhi, RSRTC Volvo buses from Sindhi Camp bus stand cost a fraction of what guesthouse-booked private coaches charge. Buy the ticket at the stand, not through a tout.
• Guides near Johari Bazaar will steer you toward gem and textile shops where they earn a 30 to 40 percent cut. Check the government-fixed-price Rajasthali emporium on MI Road first so you know what things should cost.

When to go

Beds are cheapest and easy to find from April through June when daytime heat regularly hits 44°C. October through February fills up fast, and the Jaipur Literature Festival in late January books out the better budget options weeks ahead.
