Where to stay

The tourist triangle near the beachfront cemetery holds most bars, souvenir shops, and mid-range hotels, but the cheapest hostels and guesthouses sit further inland along the two main north-south roads. Staying in the local downtown area means a short walk or mototaxi ride to the sand, plus access to cheaper supermarkets and authentic Dominican eateries away from the tourist markup.

Getting around

• Limón Falls is the main day-trip draw, a jungle hike ending in a massive freshwater swimming hole. Shared vans and tours depart constantly from the town center; booking through your hostel or a local agency on the street is significantly cheaper than airport transfers.
• The coastal road east of town leads to Punta Popy and the quieter, less developed beaches toward El Portillo. If you want to escape the noise of the main strip, walk or take a quick ride east along the shore for a more rural feel.
• Cash is king for small vendors, mototaxis, and beachside food stalls. While larger hotels and supermarkets may accept cards, the local economy runs on pesos, and ATMs can be unreliable or out of cash, so withdraw enough for several days at a time.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and quietest from May through November, the rainy season, when fewer international tourists visit. Prices spike from December through March, the dry high season, when European and North American travelers fill the peninsula and domestic holidaymakers arrive for weekends.
