Where to stay

The old town peninsula, hemmed in by the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, holds most budget guesthouses, with the cheapest options clustered on Kingkitsarat Road and the lanes running behind Sisavangvong. For lower nightly rates and more breathing room, cross the bamboo footbridge to Ban Phoneheuang on the Nam Khan's east bank, a 10-minute walk from the main temple zone.

Getting around

  • Take the slow boat from Huay Xai rather than flying. Two days down the Mekong costs a fraction of airfare and drops you at the boat landing a short walk from the old town.
  • Eat one block back from Sisavangvong Road toward the Nam Khan. The same khao piak sen and laap cost half as much once you clear the main tourist strip.
  • The morning alms-giving along Sakkaline Road happens at dawn and is worth seeing, but skip the tourist sticky-rice packages sold nearby. The ceremony gets disrupted when visitors join in, and locals have asked them not to.

When to go

Rates are softest in May and late September when the rains thin the crowds. December through February, particularly around the Bun Pha Vet festival in January, is when the old town fills up fast and any guesthouse worth staying at books out days in advance.
