You're on foot to the Rambla waterfront, Mercado del Puerto, and the main bus hub at Plaza Independencia. Barrio Sur is a quieter, slightly cheaper fallback a few blocks inland if Ciudad Vieja is full or overpriced.
Getting around
- Pick up a prepaid STM card (tarjeta STM) at any kiosk near Plaza Independencia. Every bus ride costs next to nothing and covers the whole city, including the route out to Pocitos beach.
- Mercado del Puerto is priced for tourists. Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo (MAM) on Avenida Garibaldi has the same quality food stalls at half the price, and locals actually eat there.
