Where to stay

The Ecusson, Montpellier's medieval old town, puts you within walking distance of everything and has a handful of hostels along Rue de l'Aiguillerie and near Place Saint-Roch. The blocks around Gare Saint-Roch are cheaper and still only a 10-minute walk from Place de la Comédie.

Getting around

  • Buy a 10-trip tram carnet at any ticket machine instead of single rides. Lines 1 through 5 cover the whole city and run to Odysseum on the east side, where you'll find the big supermarkets for stocking up.
  • Halles Laissac covered market (open mornings, closed Monday) has hot prepared dishes from the stall vendors for just a few euros. Far better than anything near the tourist stretch on Rue de la Loge.
  • The free beach shuttle (Navette Plages) runs from Montpellier to Palavas-les-Flots in summer. Skip the overpriced beach towns that charge for parking and transit and just take the bus.

When to go

July and August fill hostels fast as the city draws visitors heading to the coast. May, early June, and September offer lower prices and easier availability, and the university crowd thins out in late June so the area around Place Albert 1er gets quieter.
