Local knowledge for Panama City
Where to stay
Most budget travelers split between Casco Viejo, the old town where the restored hostels sit a short walk from Plaza Herrera, and El Cangrejo, the leafy grid around Via Argentina with cheaper beds and a metro stop. El Cangrejo wins on value and late-night food, Casco wins on walkable nightlife if you can stomach the small premium.
Getting around
- Buy a rechargeable Metrobus card at any Metro station or the Albrook terminal, cash fares aren't accepted on the buses and Metro Line 1 runs from Albrook straight up to El Cangrejo and Via Argentina.
- Eat lunch at Mercado de Mariscos by the Cinta Costera for a few dollars of ceviche, then skip the tourist-priced restaurants on Avenida Central A in Casco for the same plate at triple the cost.
- Use Uber instead of flagging cabs, the street taxis don't run meters and will quote a foreigner two or three times the fair rate, especially out of Casco Viejo at night.
When to go
Hostels run cheapest in the rainy stretch from May through November, then fill up and spike over the December to April dry season, with the sharpest crunch around Carnival in February and the Christmas-New Year weeks.
