Where to stay

Budget hostels cluster along the narrow Main Street in Placencia Village, the southern tip of the peninsula, where the shops, bars, and tour desks are concentrated. A few cheaper options sit just north in Seine Bight, a Garifuna village with its own beach and a quieter, more local vibe, but you will need a bike or a short taxi ride to reach the main strip.

Getting around

• The 'school bus' is the standard way to get here from Belize City or Punta Gorda. It is a shared minivan service that runs multiple times a day and costs a fraction of a private taxi or domestic flight, though the ride from the capital takes four to six hours.
• Rent a bicycle or golf cart for your stay. The peninsula is a long, thin strip with only one paved road, so walking the full length is impractical, and having your own wheels makes reaching the northern beaches and mangrove trails far easier than relying on taxis.
• Whale sharks gather at Gladden Spit near the full moon from March through June. Book a snorkeling trip with a local operator well in advance if you want to see them, as spots fill up quickly during this specific window.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and easiest to book during the rainy season from June through November, when fewer tourists visit despite the warm water. Prices spike and beds fill fast from mid-December through April, the dry season, and especially during the Placencia Lobster Festival in late October or early November, which draws large domestic crowds.
