Where to stay

Most budget hostels cluster within a few blocks of Avenida Balmaceda, the waterfront road running along Seno Última Esperanza, and along Calle Manuel Bulnes heading into the town center. Staying near Manuel Bulnes puts you close to the bus offices selling Torres del Paine transfers, which matters when you need an early departure.

Getting around

• Book your Torres del Paine park entry and camping spots online before you arrive. The park uses a quota system and the most-wanted campsites sell out weeks ahead during summer.
• Stock up on food at the supermarkets in town before heading into the park. Calories inside the park cost roughly double what you pay on Manuel Bulnes.
• The bus to Torres del Paine is far cheaper than the private shuttles advertised at hostels. Ask at the bus terminal near the waterfront, compare a couple of operators, and confirm the return schedule before you pay.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and sometimes half-empty from late April through September. They fill up fast from late November through February, with January being the tightest month to find a bed without booking at least two weeks out.
