Where to stay

Most budget hostels cluster within a few blocks of the main city beach, where food stalls and coffee shops are easy to reach on foot. A smaller, slower scene has developed at Bai Xep, a fishing cove about 20 km south of the city center, where a handful of guesthouses cater to travelers who want to stay put for a few days.

Getting around

• Major trains on the North-South line stop at Dieu Tri station, roughly 10 km from the city center. Have a Grab or a pre-arranged taxi lined up before you arrive rather than scrambling on the platform.
• Seafood is far cheaper at the working harbor area in the morning than at sit-down restaurants. Grilled fish and shellfish from vendors near the fish landing docks cost a fraction of the tourist-facing menus a few streets inland.
• Quy Nhon sits between Da Nang and Nha Trang on most itineraries and gets passed over, which keeps baseline prices low. Rates jump noticeably on weekends when Vietnamese domestic tourists arrive, so if your schedule is flexible, plan your stay Sunday through Thursday.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and easiest to book from October through early December, when the weather turns cooler and crowds thin out. Beds fill up and prices rise from late June through August, driven mainly by Vietnamese families on summer holiday.
