Where to stay

Budget travelers cluster in the historic center, within walking distance of the neo-gothic Cathedral and the Teatro de Santa Ana. This area has the best-preserved architecture and keeps you close to the main bus stops and local urbanos. Staying here avoids the need for taxis to reach the main attractions or the terminal.

Getting around

• Santa Ana is the gateway to the Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec) and Lake Coatepeque. Tours and hikes can be arranged through agencies in the city center, but prices vary, so walk a few blocks to compare options before booking.
• The city is a major coffee processing hub. If you have time, visit a local finca or roastery on the outskirts to see the process; it is far cheaper and more authentic than buying packaged coffee in the city center.
• Buses from Guatemala City pass through Santa Ana on their way to San Salvador. If you are crossing the border, you can get off in Santa Ana to break up the journey, but be aware that some long-distance buses drop passengers at the La Ceiba interchange outside the city, requiring a short taxi or urbano ride to the center.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the rainy season (May to October), when fewer tourists visit the volcanoes and lakes. Prices rise during the dry season (November to April), especially around Semana Santa and the December-January holiday period, when domestic and international travelers flock to the region for hiking and lake activities.
