Most budget hostels cluster around Ximending, the pedestrian shopping district served by Ximen MRT station, and in Zhongzheng District within walking distance of Taipei Main Station. Gongguan, a neighborhood near National Taiwan University a few MRT stops south, tends to be quieter and a bit cheaper.
Getting around
- Load an EasyCard at any MRT station before your first ride. It covers the metro, city buses, and YouBike rentals with one tap, and spares you the coin-machine queue every time you need to move.
- Raohe Street Night Market and Ningxia Night Market are smaller than Shilin and far less crowded. A full meal at either rarely tops a few dollars.
- The Airport MRT runs from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei Main Station in about 35 minutes for a budget-friendly fare. Taxis from the same route cost several times that.
