Where to stay

Most budget hostels cluster around Ximending, the pedestrian shopping district served by Ximen MRT station, and in Zhongzheng District within walking distance of Taipei Main Station. Gongguan, a neighborhood near National Taiwan University a few MRT stops south, tends to be quieter and a bit cheaper.

Getting around

  • Load an EasyCard at any MRT station before your first ride. It covers the metro, city buses, and YouBike rentals with one tap, and spares you the coin-machine queue every time you need to move.
  • Raohe Street Night Market and Ningxia Night Market are smaller than Shilin and far less crowded. A full meal at either rarely tops a few dollars.
  • The Airport MRT runs from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei Main Station in about 35 minutes for a budget-friendly fare. Taxis from the same route cost several times that.

When to go

Hostels are easiest to book and cheapest during the rainy shoulder months of May and June. Rooms fill fast and prices climb around Chinese New Year (late January or February) and during the October national holiday week.
