Local knowledge for Tirana
Where to stay
Most budget hostels sit in or just outside Blloku, the former communist-elite enclave now lined with cafes along Rruga Myslym Shyri, and within easy walking distance of Skanderbeg Square. Staying here puts you close to Pazari i Ri (the New Bazaar), the main sights, and the bar strip without needing to figure out city buses.
Getting around
- Eat lunch at Pazari i Ri, the renovated market just east of Skanderbeg Square. Byrek vendors and small Albanian lunch spots there charge a fraction of what the restaurants facing the square ask.
- The Pyramid of Tirana is free to walk up and takes about 20 minutes. It is one of the more genuinely strange pieces of communist-era architecture left standing in Europe, and no tour or ticket is needed.
- Espresso at almost any cafe in Blloku runs 80 to 100 lek, well under a dollar. Cafes directly on Skanderbeg Square charge two or three times more for the same drink.
When to go
Beds are cheapest and easiest to find from November through February; July and August bring the most visitors and hostels in Blloku fill up fast, especially on weekends.
