Most hostels sit either inside Valletta's walls within a short walk of Republic Street, or a few kilometers north in St. Julian's near Paceville, where beds cost less and the Sliema ferry gives you a quick crossing to Valletta for a small fee.
Getting around
- Pick up pastizzi at any local pastizzeria for very little each. They are the standard cheap snack and far better value than anything near the main tourist stretch on Republic Street.
- The Barrakka Lift connects Upper Barrakka Gardens to the Valletta Waterfront below for a small fee each way, a much easier option than the steep climb if you arrive by ferry from Sliema.
- Malta's buses cover the whole island from the terminus just outside Valletta's City Gate. A day pass is worth buying if you plan to visit more than one area, and inspectors do check tickets regularly.
