Where to stay

Budget stays cluster tightly around the central plaza and the main thoroughfare, Calle Salvador Cisneros, where the Viazul ticket office and most restaurants sit. Parallel to this, Calle Rafael Trejo runs south and is lined almost exclusively with casas particulares, offering a quieter street that is still a two-minute walk from the main drag. Staying in this core keeps you within walking distance of the town square and the start of the valley trails.

Getting around

• Rent a bicycle through your casa to explore the valley. The terrain is hilly and the paths are unpaved, so a mountain bike is essential, but cycling is the best way to reach the tobacco farms and cave entrances that are too far to walk comfortably in the heat.
• Hire a local guide for a few hours rather than booking a rigid tour. Locals can take you to specific sights, offer Spanish lessons, or introduce you to their families for a fraction of the cost of a packaged excursion, and it supports the community directly.
• Viazul buses from Havana are cheap but notoriously unreliable with schedules that change often. Colectivos (shared private taxis) are faster and more flexible, but you must book them a day in advance and confirm the price upfront, as drivers may try to renegotiate for return trips.

When to go

The dry season from November to April is the busiest and most expensive time, coinciding with the European and North American winter holidays. The wet season from May to October sees fewer tourists and lower rates, but afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and the humidity is high.
