Local knowledge for Brasov
Where to stay
Most hostels sit within a few minutes of Piata Sfatului, the old town's central square, which puts you close to Strada Republicii and the Black Church without paying resort prices. Schei, the neighborhood just south through Schei Gate, is quieter and a little cheaper, though you'll walk 10-15 minutes to the main square.
Getting around
- CFR trains from Bucharest Gara de Nord reach Brasov in about 2.5 hours. Book a day ahead on cfrcalatori.ro and you'll pay a fraction of what any bus charges each way.
- To visit Bran Castle, take the maxitaxi from Autogara 2 (the bus station behind the main CFR station) rather than a taxi. Runs frequently and costs a fraction of the price.
- The cable car up Tampa Mountain is cheap, but the marked hiking trail from near the Black Church is free and takes about 40 minutes. Skip it if the cable car line is long.
When to go
Beds are easiest to find and cheapest in March, April, and October. July and August fill up with summer hikers, and the Christmas market in late November through December draws enough visitors that decent hostels book out weeks ahead.
