La Viña, the neighborhood directly behind Playa de la Caleta, is where most budget travelers end up, and it earns it. It puts you within walking distance of the Catedral, the Mercado Central on Plaza de las Flores, and the tapas bars on Calle Plocia. El Pópulo, the medieval quarter squeezed up against the cathedral's east side, is quieter and has a few smaller guesthouses worth checking if La Viña is full.
Getting around
- The catamaran from El Puerto de Santa María to the Cadiz ferry terminal runs every 30 to 60 minutes and costs a couple of euros each way. It crosses the bay faster than any bus and drops you right in the city center.
- Buy food at the Mercado Central on Plaza de las Flores. It's open weekday mornings, the shrimp are cheap and local, and eating there cuts your daily food cost significantly compared to the restaurants around Plaza San Juan de Dios.
