Malasaña, centered on Plaza del Dos de Mayo, has the highest density of hostels and puts you walking distance from Gran Vía and the Prado. Lavapiés runs cheaper on both beds and food, and sits a short walk from El Rastro on Sunday mornings.
Getting around
- The Prado is free Monday through Saturday from 6 to 8pm, and Sunday from 5 to 7pm. Go late, skip the queue, and save the full entry fee.
- Order the menú del día at lunch. Most sit-down restaurants in Malasaña and Chueca offer three courses plus a drink for a few euros. The same dishes cost double at dinner.
- The Metro charges an airport supplement on top of the normal fare when you board at Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 or T4. It is not obvious at the ticket machine, so budget for it when you land.
