Local knowledge for Cairo
Where to stay
Downtown Cairo (Wust el-Balad), around Talaat Harb Street and within walking distance of Tahrir Square, has the densest cluster of budget hostels and sits on the Metro network for quick access to Giza and Islamic Cairo. If you want to be closer to Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz Street, a few hostels have opened in Islamic Cairo itself, though the trade-off is fewer food options after 10 p.m.
Getting around
- The Cairo Metro costs very little per ride and Line 2 gets you from downtown to Giza Station in 20 minutes. It is far faster than road traffic and runs until midnight.
- Book Grand Egyptian Museum entry online before you arrive. Weekend walk-in queues routinely add 90 minutes and timed slots sell out by Thursday afternoon.
- Use Careem or Uber instead of street taxis. Unmetered cabs quote tourists three to five times the local fare, and the apps lock in the price before you get in.
When to go
Prices are lowest June through August when the heat regularly hits 40C and tourist numbers drop. Hostels fill fastest October through February, especially around Christmas and New Year, when European visitors drive up rates across the board.
