Local knowledge for Cinque Terre

Where to stay

Riomaggiore and Manarola have the most hostel beds relative to their size. In Riomaggiore, look for places along Via Colombo or the lanes above the train station. If budget is the priority, La Spezia is 15 minutes by regional train and accommodation there runs about half the price of anything in the villages.

Getting around

  • Buy the Cinque Terre Card at La Spezia Centrale before you board. At a modest daily fee it covers unlimited train hops between all five villages plus trail access, and you will easily use it 6-8 times in a single day.
  • Skip the harborfront restaurants in Vernazza and Monterosso. One street back, the same anchovy pasta or pesto trofie costs noticeably less. In Riomaggiore, grab focaccia from the bakeries on Via Colombo for very cheaply.
  • The villages are tiny. Hostels across all five total maybe a few hundred beds combined, so for July or August book at least two months out or plan to base yourself in La Spezia and day-trip in.

When to go

April through early June and September offer the best combination of open trails, decent weather, and rates that have not peaked. July and August fill weeks in advance and prices across the villages roughly double.
