Local knowledge for Venice
Where to stay
Cannaregio is where most hostels cluster, particularly along and just off Strada Nova, within easy walking distance of Santa Lucia train station. Staying in Mestre on the mainland cuts costs significantly, and the commute into Venice by train takes about 10 minutes.
Getting around
- Buy a 24 or 48-hour ACTV vaporetto pass on arrival. Single tickets run several euros each, so if you ride more than twice a day the pass pays for itself fast.
- Eat cicchetti at bacari near the Rialto Market or in Cannaregio rather than sitting down anywhere close to Piazza San Marco. A few small plates and a glass of wine runs a fraction of what a sit-down meal costs in the tourist corridor.
- San Marco and the surrounding calli flood regularly during acqua alta season from October through January. Pack waterproof shoes or plan on buying the cheap disposable plastic boots sold at street stalls when the sirens go off.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest in November and early December, and fill up fast from June through August as well as during Carnival in February.
