Where to stay

Almost all budget accommodation is concentrated in Hanga Roa, the island's only town, clustered along Avenida Tahai and the streets radiating from the main plaza. Staying near the waterfront puts you within walking distance of the airport, the main bus terminal, and the few supermarkets, while the northern end near the beach is quieter but slightly further from the center.

Getting around

• Rent a bicycle or scooter immediately upon arrival. The island is small but the key attractions like Ahu Tongariki and Rano Raraku are scattered far from town, and public buses run on a limited schedule that can leave you stranded if you miss the last return trip.
• Buy your Rapa Nui National Park pass in advance or at the visitor center in town. It grants access to the main archaeological sites and is mandatory for visiting the moai statues; carrying cash for entrance fees is essential as card acceptance at remote sites is unreliable.
• Book flights from Santiago well ahead of time. Air Tahiti Nui and LATAM are the primary carriers, and seats fill up quickly during peak season. Arriving via the Mataveri International Airport means you are already in Hanga Roa, so no transfer is needed.

When to go

Hostels are most expensive and hardest to book during the Easter holiday period (March/April) and the Chilean summer holidays of December through February. The shoulder months of April-May and September-October offer better rates and fewer crowds, with pleasant weather for hiking and cycling around the island.
