Local knowledge for Hamburg
Where to stay
Most hostels cluster in St. Pauli, within walking distance of the Reeperbahn, which puts you on the U3 line and close to the Landungsbrücken harbor piers. The Schanzenviertel, a few blocks north, has cheaper supermarkets and a quieter street-level feel while still being an easy walk or single U-Bahn stop from St. Pauli.
Getting around
- The Fischermarkt in Altona runs every Sunday from 5am (7am in winter) and wraps up around 9:30. Vendors offload surplus fruit, bread, and smoked fish cheaply in the final half hour.
- The S1 S-Bahn runs directly from Hamburg Airport to Hauptbahnhof in about 25 minutes for a standard HVV fare. There is no reason to pay for a taxi unless you have a lot of luggage going somewhere off the rail network.
- A Hamburg Card covers unlimited HVV transit and cuts entry at most city museums. If you plan to visit more than two museums in a day, it pays for itself before lunch.
When to go
January and February are the cheapest months to book. Hostels fill up in July and August, and prices spike again during the spring and fall DOM funfair and the Christmas market weeks in late November and early December.
