Local knowledge for Ipoh
Where to stay
Most budget hostels cluster in the Old Town around Jalan Panglima (Concubine Lane) and the nearby shophouse streets off Jalan Dato Maharajalela. It puts you within walking distance of the ETS train station, the morning coffee shops, and the murals without needing a ride.
Getting around
- Take the ETS train from KL Sentral (roughly 2.5 hours, around RM35-45) instead of the bus. The train station drops you right at the edge of Old Town. The bus terminal is much farther out.
- Breakfast at the Old Town coffee shops along Jalan Panglima starts around 7am. Get there before 9am or you will be sharing your table with tour groups and waiting for dim sum.
- Grab a Grab to Sam Poh Tong or Perak Tong cave temples instead of flagging a taxi. The caves are about 5km from Old Town and tuk-tuk drivers near Concubine Lane will quote you 3-4x the app fare.
When to go
Weekday rates stay low most of the year, but hostels fill quickly during Malaysian school holidays in June and December, and Chinese New Year weekend draws enough domestic visitors to push prices noticeably higher.
