Where to stay

The city center is compact, with most budget hostels clustering within walking distance of Parque Vicente León and the main bus terminal. Staying near the plaza keeps you close to the cathedral, cheap local eateries, and the streets where tour agencies for Cotopaxi and Quilotoa are concentrated, avoiding the need for taxis to join morning departures.

Getting around

• Most tour agencies for Cotopaxi National Park and the Quilotoa Loop are clustered along Calle Guayaquil. Walk a few blocks to compare prices, as expeditions organized from Latacunga are typically cheaper than those booked in Quito.
• Try chugchucaras, the local specialty of deep-fried pork, hominy, and plantains, often found on Quijano y Ordoñez street. It is a heavy, shareable meal that is far cheaper and more authentic than standard tourist fare.
• Latacunga sits at nearly 2,900 meters. Take it easy on your first day to acclimatize, especially if you plan to hike Illiniza or climb Cotopaxi, as altitude sickness can quickly ruin a short trip.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the rainy season (April–May and October–November), when cloud cover obscures the volcanoes and visitor numbers drop. Prices spike during the dry season (June–September) for better views, and around the Fiesta de la Mama Negra in September and Ecuador’s Independence Day in November.
