Where to stay

Budget hostels cluster in two main pockets: right in front of the Terminal Terrestre for those in transit, and along the streets of the Obrero neighborhood, which is the hub for nightlife, bars, and university students. Staying near the terminal is convenient for early departures but can be noisy; Obrero puts you in the center of the action with easy access to the main highway and local eateries.

Getting around

• Buses from Quito depart from the Quitumbe terminal in the south and take about five hours. For connections to other parts of Ecuador, it is often faster and more reliable to take a frequent bus to Ambato first, then transfer from there, rather than waiting for less frequent direct routes.
• The town is a gateway to the Amazon, with many community-based tourism projects, waterfalls, and rafting trips available. Book these through local agencies in town rather than online packages, as prices and inclusions vary significantly and you can often negotiate better rates on the ground.
• Expect rain daily. The climate is consistently humid and overcast with short but heavy downpours, so pack a good rain jacket and quick-dry clothing. The heat is moderate, but the humidity makes everything feel warmer, and trails can be muddy year-round.

When to go

Prices are generally lowest during the wettest months, typically January and February, when heavy rains can disrupt some jungle tours. The driest period, from June to September, sees higher demand and rates as conditions are best for outdoor activities and wildlife spotting, though rain is still possible.
