Local knowledge for Miami

Where to stay

Most hostels cluster along Collins Avenue in South Beach's northern blocks, roughly 10th to 20th Street, where you're a short walk from the beach without paying Ocean Drive prices. Little Havana, centered on Calle Ocho (SW 8th Street), runs cheaper and puts you near some of the best cheap food in the city, with a Metrobus ride back downtown whenever you need it.

Getting around

  • The Metromover is free and connects Brickell, downtown, and the Omni area. Use it instead of rideshares for short hops between those neighborhoods.
  • Order at the counter at Versailles on SW 8th Street, not the sit-down section. Cuban coffee and a pastelito will run you very cheaply, versus much more if you take a table.
  • Avoid booking during Art Basel (first week of December) or Spring Break (mid-March). Hostel beds that normally go for budget rates routinely hit several times that during those windows.

When to go

Summer (June through August) is when rates drop the most, since the heat and humidity thin out demand. Prices climb steadily from November and peak between December and April, when snowbirds and festival crowds arrive.
