Local knowledge for Montezuma

Where to stay

The town is tiny and everything sits within a 15-minute walk of the main road that skirts the coast. Most hostels cluster on the single street that cuts inland from that road to end at Playa Montezuma, keeping you close to the beach and the bars. A few places sit further south along the coast toward Cabuya and Cabo Blanco, which is quieter but means a walk or bus ride back for food and drinks.

Getting around

  • Bring enough cash for your whole stay. There is only one ATM in town and it is almost always out of service; the nearest reliable bank is in Cobano, about 7 km away, and a taxi round-trip there is a significant expense.
  • The waterfalls are the main draw, with three tiers flowing into one another. Wear proper hiking sandals or water shoes rather than flip-flops, and be extremely cautious climbing to the second tier, as the rocks are slippery and injuries from jumping are common.
  • Get to the Nicoya Peninsula via the Puntarenas to Paquera ferry, which is a fraction of the cost of flying into the Tambor airstrip. From Paquera, buses run directly to Montezuma, though the road from Cobano onward is narrow, hilly, and poorly paved.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the green season from May through November, when daily rains keep visitor numbers lower. Prices spike and beds fill during the dry season from December through April, especially around Christmas, New Year, and Easter, when the weather is reliably sunny and domestic tourists flood the peninsula.
