Local knowledge for Tortuguero
Where to stay
The village is tiny and strung along a single main road, with almost all hostels clustered within a few blocks of the canal-side dock where the public boats arrive. Staying near the dock keeps you walking distance from the restaurants and tour agencies; beds further up the road are quieter but mean a walk back to the water after dark.
Getting around
- Tortuguero has no roads connecting it to the rest of the country. You must arrive by boat from Moín (south) or La Pavona (north), or by a small prop plane from San José. The boat route involves a bus to the mainland landing and then a canal ride, so plan for a full half-day of travel and confirm schedules in advance.
- The canals are the main attraction, earning the town its nickname of Central America's Amazon. Guided boat tours leave from the dock throughout the day to spot monkeys, sloths, and birds in the rainforest. Book through your hostel or any agency on the main road rather than paying premium rates at the dock itself.
- Turtle nesting is strictly regulated. Only authorized guides from the Sea Turtle Conservancy are allowed to interact with nests and hatchlings. Do not use white lights or camera flashes near hatchlings, as it disorients them, and ignore any local guides offering to illegally dig up nests.
When to go
Hostels fill fast from June through October, when green turtles nest in large numbers and hatchlings emerge. The leatherback season from February to June also draws visitors, though in smaller numbers. The driest months of December through April see fewer turtles but more comfortable weather for canal tours, with prices moderate outside of holiday weeks.
