Most budget hostels sit inside Vecrīga (Old Town) or in the blocks between it and the train station, which puts you walking distance from the Central Market and the main sights. A few cheaper options appear further out along Brīvības iela, but the Old Town cluster is the most practical base for a short stay.

Getting around

  • Eat at Centrāltirgus, the Central Market near the train station. The food counters inside the repurposed Zeppelin hangars serve hot lunches for a fraction of what any sit-down restaurant in Vecrīga charges.
  • Walk Alberta iela to see the Art Nouveau facades. It is about 15 minutes on foot north of Old Town and costs nothing, and the concentration of intact buildings on that one street is worth the detour.
  • Skip restaurants directly on Līvu laukums. That square is the tourist bullseye and prices reflect it. Move one or two streets deeper into Old Town and the same food is noticeably cheaper.
