Where to stay
The village runs uphill from the lancha dock, with the lakeside path and its yoga and meditation places at the bottom and the ordinary Guatemalan town at the top. Nearly all hostels sit in the lower few hundred metres, so everything is a walk, and there are effectively no cars in the middle of it.
Getting around
- Lanchas from Panajachel stop running in the early evening and the lake gets choppy by afternoon. Travel in the morning, and agree the fare before you step in rather than after.
- The Cerro Tzankujil reserve next to the village has the cliff jump and the quietest swimming access on this side of the lake, for a small entrance fee rather than a tour price.
- San Marcos is the quiet, wellness-oriented village on the lake. If you want nightlife you will be taking a lancha to San Pedro and paying for a late private boat back.
