Where to stay

The village clings to the steep mountainside roughly 100 meters above the lake, accessible only by boat or footpath. Almost all budget beds sit along the single winding path from the dock up to the sports court, the main gathering point. Staying near the dock means a shorter haul with luggage, while beds higher up offer quieter views but a steeper walk.

Getting around

• The public trail system is extensive and the best way to explore, connecting Santa Cruz to the neighboring village of Jaibalito through tropical gardens and past hidden waterfalls. Walking the trail is far more rewarding than the rough road, which is barely passable for anything but heavy trucks.
• Public taxi boats connect Santa Cruz to Panajachel and San Pedro for a modest fare. You can flag one down at the dock to go to any other town on the lake, and Panajachel is a short ride away if you need supplies or nightlife without the hassle of staying there.
• Electricity is intermittent and expensive, so many households lack reliable power. Bring a headlamp, charge devices fully before arriving, and do not expect consistent WiFi or outlets at your hostel.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest during the rainy season from May through October, when fewer international visitors arrive and the lake is often misty. Prices climb from December through April, the dry season, when clear skies and pleasant weather draw the bulk of tourists to Lake Atitlan.
