Where to stay

Nearly all budget accommodation clusters along North Cliff, the clifftop strip above Papanasam Beach, where guesthouses sit a short walk from the sea. Odayam Beach, about 1 km north, has quieter, cheaper rooms if the main strip feels too loud.

Getting around

• Restaurants on the cliff edge charge a premium for the view. Walk one or two lanes back from the path and prices for the same thali or fish curry drop noticeably.
• The train station, Varkala Sivagiri, sits roughly 3 km from North Cliff on the coastal line running between Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. Autorickshaws cover it in about 10 minutes. Agree on the fare before you get in.
• Varkala has strong lateral currents. Swim only within the flagged zone near the lifeguards at Papanasam Beach, not at the smaller coves that look inviting from the cliff path above.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest from June through August when monsoon rains arrive and the sea is too rough for swimming, with rates sometimes half what they are in winter. December and January bring the highest prices and fully booked cliffs, so plan ahead if you are traveling around Christmas or New Year.
