Where to stay

Budget travelers who want beach access without paying Oberoi prices tend to cluster along Jalan Double Six and the back streets feeding into it, where small guesthouses and hostels sit a short walk from the sand. If you're willing to be 10 minutes from the water, Petitenget has cheaper beds, a quieter feel, and easy scooter access to Jalan Kayu Aya (Eat Street) for food.

Getting around

• Rent a scooter for 70,000-90,000 IDR per day rather than using taxis. Grab and Gojek are useful but are blocked from dropping you at most beach clubs, so you end up walking the last stretch anyway.
• Eat on the inland side of Jalan Seminyak, not the beach-facing strip. Warung meals 50 meters off the main road cost half what the same dish runs at anything with an ocean view.
• Hostel prices in December and July can be two to three times the September rate. If your dates are flexible, shoulder months are where you find the gap between affordable beds and genuinely good weather.

When to go

February and March are the cheapest months to book, once the New Year crowd clears. July, August, and the two weeks around Christmas are when hostels fill earliest and rates peak.
