Local knowledge for Nusa Penida
Where to stay
Most budget accommodation sits along Jalan Raya Sampalan near the main ferry port, which makes early departures back to Sanur easy. Toyapakeh, on the northwest tip, has a second cluster closer to the dive shops and Manta Point boats.
Getting around
- Rent a scooter in Sampalan on arrival (around 70,000-100,000 IDR per day). There is no reliable public transport and the viewpoints at Kelingking and Broken Beach are spread far apart.
- Bring more cash than you expect to need. The ATMs on Jalan Raya Sampalan run dry on busy weekends and there is no fallback elsewhere on the island.
- Buy fast boat tickets from Sanur Harbor directly through the operator (Maruti Express, Semaya One, or similar) at least a day ahead in peak months. Hotel desks mark them up and same-day seats are gone by mid-morning.
When to go
April through early June and September are the sweet spot for prices and availability. July, August, and the Christmas-to-New-Year stretch fill hostels weeks out and rates climb noticeably.
