Where to stay

Budget beds cluster around the central plaza and the famous Calle Cubierta, the roofed street built in 1964 that shelters shops and eateries. Staying here keeps you within walking distance of the bus terminal, the San Antonio de Padua church, and the trailheads for Cerro Uritorco, avoiding the need for taxis in a town where services are sparse outside the core.

Getting around

• Cerro Uritorco is only a few kilometers from town but requires a hike or a short taxi ride to the base. The climb to the summit is steep and best attempted early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and crowds.
• Capilla del Monte is famous for alleged UFO sightings, particularly around Cerro Uritorco. If you are interested in this lore, visit the hill after dark, but be prepared for a mix of genuine enthusiasts and commercialized folklore.
• Bring cash. While the town center has some ATMs, they can run out of money during peak weekends, and smaller vendors, trail guides, and rural taxis often do not accept cards.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and quietest from May to September, when the weather is cooler and domestic tourism drops. Prices spike and beds fill up during the December-February summer holiday stretch and on long weekends, when Argentines from Buenos Aires and Córdoba city flock to the mountains.
