Where to stay

Budget travelers cluster around the Plaza 9 de Julio and the blocks of Congreso Street where the Casa Histórica sits. This historic center is compact and walkable, keeping you close to the main sights and the university district's nightlife. Staying here avoids the need for taxis, as the city's heavy traffic makes walking far more efficient for short distances.

Getting around

• The bus terminal is one of the largest in the country and sits within walking distance of the downtown hostel area. Local buses like routes 4, 8, and 10 connect the terminal to the plaza, but walking is often faster given the disorganized traffic.
• Use only official white taxis with yellow and black stripes. Unmarked cars posing as taxis are illegal and common scams targeting foreigners. For longer trips, the city's extensive bus network is cheap and reliable.
• Tucumán is the gateway to the Yungas rainforests and Tafí Valley. Book day trips to places like Quilmes Ruins or Amaicha del Valle through agencies near the plaza, which are significantly cheaper than airport transfers or private hires.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and least crowded during the winter months of June through August, when the weather is dry and sunny but cooler. Prices spike during the summer rainy season (December–March) and around July 9th, the national independence day celebrated in the city.
