Where to stay

Budget hostels cluster tightly around the colonial center, specifically along Calle Belgrano and the blocks radiating from Plaza 25 de Mayo. Staying here puts the Cabildo, the cathedral, and the main bus terminal within walking distance, though the center can get noisy on weekends. The area is flat and pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to reach the artisan markets and restaurants without needing a taxi.

Getting around

• The bus terminal is about a 15-minute walk from the center, but taking a local bus or taxi is cheap and saves energy, especially if you are arriving with heavy gear. The street food near the terminal is excellent and very cheap, so grab a snack before heading into town.
• Jujuy is the gateway to the Quebrada de Humahuaca. Most day trips to Tilcara, Purmamarca, and Humahuaca depart from the terminal or are booked through agencies in the city center. Compare prices at a few agencies on Belgrano Street before booking, as rates for the same tour can vary significantly.
• Altitude sickness is a real concern as the city sits at over 1,200 meters and surrounding attractions go much higher. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on your first day, and consider coca tea if available. The weather is dry and sunny during the day but can get cold at night, so pack layers.

When to go

Hostels are cheapest and least crowded during the winter months of June through August, when nights are cold and some high-altitude roads may be affected by frost. Prices spike during the national holiday stretch in late December and early January, and around the famous Jujuy Carnival in February, when the city fills with domestic tourists and street parties.
