Local knowledge for Malaga
Where to stay
Most budget hostels cluster around Plaza de la Merced and Calle Granada in El Centro, close to the Alcazaba and Atarazanas market without paying beach-adjacent prices. El Soho, just south of Calle Córdoba, runs a little cheaper and is a short walk from the waterfront.
Getting around
- The Cercanías C1 train from Málaga Airport to Centro Alameda costs a couple of euros and takes 12 minutes. The taxi queue outside arrivals starts much higher for the same trip.
- Atarazanas market closes by 2pm on weekdays and shuts entirely Sunday. Go before noon if you want the produce and fish stalls rather than just the souvenir perimeter.
- Málaga pulls double duty as a beach destination and a transit stop for Morocco crossings, so dorm beds in July and August fill from two directions. Book at least three weeks out for any summer weekend.
When to go
Hostels are cheapest November through February. July and August are the most expensive and the hardest to book last-minute.
