Local knowledge for Nara
Where to stay
Most budget hostels cluster within a 10-minute walk of Kintetsu Nara Station, which puts you closer to the main sights than JR Nara Station does. Naramachi, the old machiya district south of Sarusawa Pond, has a handful of guesthouses on quieter lanes if you want to avoid the main tourist drag.
Getting around
- Take the Kintetsu Limited Express direct from Osaka Namba or Kyoto rather than routing through JR. It drops you at Kintetsu Nara Station, which is a 5-minute walk to Nara Park instead of 20.
- Get into Nara Park before 8 a.m. The deer are calm, the tour buses haven't arrived yet, and Todai-ji's Great Buddha Hall looks completely different without 400 people in front of it.
- The Higashimuki covered arcade near Kintetsu Station has cheap set-lunch teishoku spots for under a thousand yen. Skip the overpriced mochi shops right at the park entrance and eat here instead.
When to go
Hostels fill fast and prices spike during cherry blossom season (late March to mid-April), Golden Week (late April through early May), and fall foliage weekends in November. January through early March is the cheapest window, cold but very manageable.
